Holzgerlingen's
The museum
occupies the old "Gäßles" schoolhouse, built in 1871 and renovated in
1988. Local history is vividly documented on four floors, covering an area of
450 square meters.
Holzgerlingen's "Heimatmuseum" (local history museum) is one
of the most interesting facilities of its kind in the region. Its foyer and
staircase are lined with photographs, documents, maps and graphics presenting
an overview of the history of Holzgerlingen from its beginnings to the present.
The ground floor of the museum houses an original 170-year-old blacksmith's
shop with functional bellows. Also exhibited are lathes and locksmith's tools
along with a collection of locks and door hinges.
On the other floors one can view detailed replicas of the workshops of
cabinet-makers, carriage-builders, shoemakers, harness-makers, saddlers and
rope-makers. Numerous weaving and knitting machines, some over 200 years old,
recall the longstanding tradition of the weaving trade in Holzgerlingen. The
potter's shop offers an insight into bygone folk-art forms. Displayed here are
original handpainted decorative tiles from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Farm life is illustrated in an elaborate reproduction of a barn and in a
typical farmhouse sitting room and bedroom. A special feature of the museum is
the old classroom with furniture and teaching and writing materials dating back
to the turn of the century.
The top floor is occupied by an extensive exhibit of the archaeological
discoveries in the Holzgerlingen area. These include the 1925 findings of an
ancient burial grounds, as well as artifacts of early Roman and other historic
and pre-historic settlements. Special theme exhibits are offered throughout the
year.
For opening hours please see the homepage of the Heimatmuseum or send an email via
